Mike Aldred, Carefree Credit
Mike is a consumer finance specialist with over 35 years’ experience in operations, sales, management and training, working with some of the world’s largest finance providers. He has a specialist knowledge of finance within the healthcare markets having spent the last 15 years focusing on the dental, healthcare and aesthetics industries and assessing finance product suitability. He is a partner and director of Carefree Credit with responsibility for sales and operations.
Jamie Crittall, Virtual Recall
Jamie qualified from Bristol Vet School in 1993. He owns two separate UK veterinary practices – a family-owned 145-year old multi-branch practice and a 5-year old start-up – as well as the global healthcare compliance software company, Virtual Recall, which currently has their iRecall® software installed in 3 continents, including almost one third of UK practices. Jamie has an in-depth knowledge and love for the media, having spent 5-years in British television. He appeared regularly as a vet on The Big Breakfast; Sky News; BBC1’s The Really Useful Show, and latterly, co-presenting Pet Rescuers and Pet Rescue Roadshow. He has radio broadcast around the country and is a regular speaker and contributor at UK veterinary business, technology and marketing seminars, conferences, events and industry fora, and he is a Trustee of the Petplan Charitable Trust. Jamie is married with three children and a menagerie of pets and he can often be found mountain biking around the Surrey Hills.
Brian Faulkner, The Colourful Consultancy
Brian has worked in over 300 practices in the UK both as a clinician and a practice management consultant. His MBA focused on the role of leadership and organisational culture on financial performance within veterinary practice. He set up, developed and then sold a cluster of SA practices in Suffolk between 2002 and 2009. His practices were runner up finalists in The Pet Plan Practice of the Year competition and Brian was their Vet of the Year in 2008. He has a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and is a lecturer in Veterinary Entrepreneurship at Nottingham University and Vice Chair in Business and Professional Studies at the European School of Veterinary Post graduate studies. He became the SPVS President at their Congress in January.
Tim Gammon, LEASE UK
Tim Gammon was actively involved in arranging finance for Veterinary surgeons before many of you were born! His whole career has been in arranging Equipment & Vehicle finance for the ‘Healthcare’ Professions, particularly Vets. He helped many young Vets set up their own practices, some of whom have gone on to become ‘leading lights’ in the Profession.
Usually on parade at most of the major Veterinary exhibitions, Tim is the ‘face’ of LEASE UK Ltd; as a founding Director of this specialist brokerage, now established for over twenty years, Tim brings a wealth of common sense experience to this Focus on Finance day. Over the years, he has gained a depth of understanding across the whole spectrum of practice finance. Acknowledging the challenges that veterinary practices face today, his knowledge and innovative thinking mean that Tim and his team at Lease UK find personalised solutions to a wide range of asset financing issues.
Georgina Hills, IVC
Georgina started as a student veterinary nurse in 1995, and since then has worked throughout practices in the southwest as a nurse, Head Nurse and Practice Manager. Georgina completed the level 5 ILM diploma and learning and in 2013 sat the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM) awarded by the VPMA and won the Glynne Davis Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in the examination. George now sits on the CVPM exam board and is a VPMA Board member. In 2016 George joined Independent Vetcare as a Business Support Manager, looking after 12 practices in North Wales and Cheshire, supporting and developing the businesses with their Clinical Directors and Practice Managers.
Matt Horobin, Woodcroft Veterinary Group
Matt is Operations Manager for Woodcroft Veterinary Group, a 7 practice small animal first opinion, referral & A&E hospital. He passed the CVPM in 2015 and has been in the veterinary world since 2013. In his current role, he is responsible for the day to day running of the practice which includes day to day accounting queries, general SAGE queries & report building, data analysis, IT support, and dealing with anything that the day throws up within practice management! Before this he worked as a manager within the IT sector, as a real ale brewery manager & as Operations Manager & Customer Relations Manager for an insurance contractors within the building sector.
Alison Lambert, Onswitch
After qualifying as a vet in 1989, Alison worked in practice for several years before pursuing a business career with Hill’s Pet Nutrition and MARS. In 2001 she established Onswitch – providing research, marketing, CPD and business consultancy for vets. Alison lectures at The University of Nottingham Vet School in Customer Understanding.
Nick Lawrence, FCCA, Moore Scarrott
Nick worked for a high street bank for almost 17 years holding many managerial positions within the personal, business and commercial sectors. In 1999 Nick moved in to accountancy with a large regional practice, qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant before joining Moore Scarrott in 2003 and becoming an Associate partner in 2010. Nick regularly advises veterinary practices on start up situations, buy in, acquisitions and disposals. Nick holds Special Lecturer status with the University of Nottingham where he lectures on accountancy and finance
Andrew Rastall, Connected Vet
Andrew founded Connected Vet in 2013 to provide plain-English web, content and customer-relationship-marketing consultancy for veterinary practices. Andrew’s presentations draw on over 25 years’ experience in PR & digital marketing drawing inspiration for vets from his work in industry verticals that range from hospitality to FMCG, education & healthcare. Andrew regularly presents keynote material on contemporary themes within the digital and marketing verticals, most recently on digital channel optimisation and data security.
Alan Robinson B.V.Sc. MRCVS DMS, Vet Dynamics
Alan qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in Australia and has over 25 years’ experience in practice in the UK and Australia. He ran his own mixed multi-branch practice for 12 years in the UK and studied for a Diploma in Management. He has worked as a consultant in the areas of technical service, training, product development and marketing for the veterinary industry and has successfully delivered coaching and management consultancy in electronics, pharmaceutical, global retail and veterinary industries. “As a veterinary surgeon in practice for over 20 years and a successful business consultant to more than 600 practices over 15 years as well as director of Vet Dynamics, my mission is to help independent practice owners improve performance and quality of life in practice. I believe most practice owners are working much too hard, for far too long and for far too little reward, because of inefficiency, frustration and poor profitability in their veterinary business.”
Julie Ross, Vets4Pets
Julie Ross is a qualified vet who graduated from Cambridge in 2002. Julie worked as an equine vet in the USA for 4 years post graduation, completing her specialist training in equine medicine (Dip. ACVIM) at Rood and Riddle and at the University of Pennsylvania. After short spells at the Animal Health Trust and working as a Defra adviser Julie career changed and joined Bain and Company, a global strategy consulting firm, in London. Julie worked across a wide range of industries and geographies while at Bain, advising major clients in the technology, financial services, pharma, retail and private equity sectors. In 2012-13 Julie spent a year completing her MBA at INSEAD, currently the top ranked business school in the world. Julie left Bain in early 2014 to build the strategy function at Pets at Home Vet Group and is now the Commercial Director for the Group. Her role includes leading the marketing, strategy and supplier relations teams and she is a member of the Group’s Executive Team.
Richard Rowe, DotVet
After graduating from Glasgow University Vet School in 1974, Richard was a surgery houseman until 1975, worked in a mixed practice until 1976 and returned to home practice 1976. The Practice expanded to 25 vets, 2 Hospitals and 2 surgeries. The practice was a founder practice of Independent Vet Care , with the Equine department retained and run by son Nelson Rowe. Richard continues to help with out-of-hours equine. Richard is a past President of BVHA and a Past RCVS hospital inspector. Richard had wanted to use computers to help the practice run efficiently and helped introduce ‘Verfiac’ the first Vet PMS in 1978. He developed “DotVet” with 2 other large practices who were unhappy with their systems, with it’s commercial release in 2013.
Susie Samuel, Vet Help Direct
Susie graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2001 and has worked in both mixed and small animal practice. In 2006, she launched the website www.vethelpdirect.com, which provides internet marketing solutions and social media services to veterinary practices. In 2014 she graduated from Squared Online, Google’s Certificate in Internet Marketing.
John Sheridan, MRCVS
After a 25 year career in practice and having established a small group of franchised veterinary practices, John Sheridan was appointed MD of Anicare in 1985, offering a wide range of management consultancy services to the profession. Ex-President of BSAVA and first President of the VPMA, John holds a Diploma in Management Studies, a Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management from the VHMA in the US and the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Administration awarded jointly by Purdue University and the American Animal Hospital Association. John was joint founder of Veterinary Practice Initiatives, the first veterinary corporate consolidator in the UK and its CVO until 2003. He has spoken widely on veterinary practice management across the world and publishes Veterinary Business and presents the Veterinary Business Video Show both to international audiences online.
Nick Stuart MRCVS, ProVets
Nick worked variously in mixed practice, as the sole vet for a large farming group, before settling on small animal practice. He was the founding partner of Vale Vets and Vale Referrals, a small animal and referral practice operating out of two RCVS accredited hospitals in Dursley and Portishead. In 2014, Vale Vets merged with Manor Vets in Birmingham to form ProVets and Nick now works as their Commercial Director. He is also an Assessor for the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme. As SPVS President last year, Nick launched the SPVS Wellbeing Awards which he has run for SPVS in partnership with RCVS Mind Matters.
Paul Wilson, VetPartners
Paul Wilson graduated from Murdoch University in 1988 and registered with the RCVS in January 1990 when he came to the UK. In August 1993 he purchased a long standing single handed practice in Bishop Auckland and over the last 23 years has built the practice to cover 3 site and have 18 vets. The practice was sold to the VetPartners Group in August 2016. Paul has always had a strong interest in business management and has stayed on as a Business Development Manager looking after practices in the Southern Region of the North East of England.
